Members of Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, Ijebu Zone on Monday thronged the Police Area Command, Igbeba, with their vehicles to protest the illegal suspension of members loyal to the embattled State Chairman of RTEAN, Alhaji Ahmed Kuku.
The aggrieved members lamented the deprivation of their vehicles from loading in various garages across Ijebu Zone pointing accusing finger at the Transport Union Committee led by Barrister Sunday Adeniyi.
The spokesperson for the protesters, Comrade Salisu Alao who is the State Organising Secretary and Ijebu Zonal Chairman of RTEAN, said Barrister Adeniyi led Committee set up months ago by Governor Dapo Abiodun have been making life unbearable for the union members loyal to Alhaji Ahmed Kuku.
“For the past three months, we have been sent packing from our various parks because we are supporting Alhaji Ahmed Kuku. Our members have not been working for the past three months, and they have families. We are law abiding citizen of Ogun State, Nigeria and we don’t want war or crisis, we don’t want to fight and take laws into our hands, and that is why we are here on a peaceful protest.
We have not been working since the inauguration of the transport committee three months ago. We have contacted the Chairman of the transport committee on several occasions but he never attended to the issue. We have also reported this issue to the Police Area commander, Ijebu but he didn’t act on it at all.
We appeal to the state governor to listen to our pleas and restore normalcy in our various parks across the state. We want him to use his good office to restore everything back to order.”
Also speaking, the State Officer of RTEAN, Alhaji Isiaka Olowolodun, stated that as things are happening, it is becoming unbearable for members.
He said, “We don’t want crisis to happen, that is the reason we have come to the law enforcement agencies to look into the issue. When this current government came in, they appointed the transport committee to look into lingering issues within the transport system in Ogun state. We never knew their intention was to witch-hunt transport workers perceived to be loyal to Alhaji Ahmed Kuku. We have been humiliated, intimidated and sent out of all parks across Ogun-East.
More than 200 vehicles have been sent out of several parks across the state. We don’t want to engage in reprisal attacks, that’s why we are here.
The government said they have appointed the transport committee to look into the transport matters within three months and unfortunately, the three months have expired. We don’t want to engage in killings and unrest, and that’s why we are have come to the law enforcement agencies.
This is our only source of livelihood, and we appeal to the state government to help us look into this matter.”
It will be recalled that Governor Dapo Abiodun in June dissolved all Transport Unions in the state and set up a 13-man committee to coordinate the activities of road transport across the state.
It is worrisome and quite unfortunate that the Governor did not endeavour to carry out thorough investigation on the activities of the so called Transport Committe who have gone beyond Terms of Reference given them.
