The Federal Government of Nigeria accounted for the bulk of the liability, holding about N152.77 trillion of the total public debt, with states and the Federal Capital Territory responsible for roughly N14.01 trillion, the report added.
On the composition of domestic obligations, Federal Government bonds were the largest single item, with outstanding FGN bonds valued at N64.84 trillion. Nigerian Treasury Bills totalled N19.48 trillion, FGN Sukuk stood at N1.19 trillion and FGN savings bonds amounted to N122.45 billion, according to the DMO data cited by Nairametrics. Nairametrics
Despite the rise in the overall debt stock, domestic debt-service payments fell in the second quarter. Total domestic debt service declined to N2.14 trillion in Q2 2026 from N3.14 trillion in Q1, a drop of about N1 trillion, the DMO figures show. Interest and rental payments made up N1.98 trillion of the Q2 bill, while principal repayments were N164.28 billion. Nairametrics
Interest on FGN bonds formed the largest portion of Q2 interest payments, at N1.39 trillion. The government paid N530.84 billion in FGN bond interest in April, N332.49 billion in May and N525.05 billion in June. Interest on Nigerian Treasury Bills totalled N488.80 billion for the quarter. FGN Sukuk rental payments were N92.29 billion, while interest on FGN savings and green bonds accounted for smaller amounts. Nairametrics
Principal repayments were substantially lower than interest costs. The largest principal payment occurred in June, when the government settled N136.96 billion, comprising N66.27 billion in local-currency promissory notes and N70.69 billion in foreign-currency-denominated promissory notes. Smaller principal repayments were recorded in April and May. Nairametrics
