According to a report by Punch, England were beaten 3-2 by Spain in a UEFA Nations League match at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The report said Spain took an early lead when Lamine Yamal scored in the second minute. England recovered before half time, with Anthony Gordon and captain Harry Kane putting the hosts ahead, the account added.

Punch reported that Kane had the chance to increase England’s lead from the penalty spot but slipped as he struck the kick and the ball hit the crossbar. Spain then drew level through Alex Baena and secured the win when Mikel Oyarzabal scored the decisive goal.

The match description in the report referred to Thomas Tuchel’s side staging the recovery that put England ahead at the break.

The Punch piece carried a string of comments from Kane after the game. He was quoted as saying, “I think we’re close, without a doubt. I think anyone who watched that game will see that.”

Kane stressed that results and trophies matter. “They have the trophies to back it up, so until we do that, we can only use words. We have to show it on the pitch,” the report quoted him.

He reflected on England’s recent history in major finals and tournaments in the same interview, the report added. It noted England lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final and were beaten by Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals, and recorded Kane saying, “But we’re top four in the world. We finished third in the World Cup, so without a doubt, we’re close, and I think they would have felt that out there today for sure.”

The Punch story attributed the match coverage and quotes to AFP. The original report is available at Punch’s website here.
