Nigeria Open set for November 16 to 20, 2027, NGF announces
The Nigeria Golf Federation has said the Nigeria Open Golf Tournament will return after a 28-year absence, scheduled for November 16 to 20, 2027.
The federation’s president, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, announced the plan while speaking in Abuja, saying the event will be staged as a 64-hole, four-day Pro-Am with official world-ranking status and a connection to the Amateur World Ranking.
The NGF expects a competitive field of between 150 and 200 golfers and anticipates entrants from more than 20 countries across Africa, Europe and beyond. Discussions are under way with the Lakowe Lakes Golf Resort in Lagos to host the championship, the federation said.
“We are very happy to announce that we will be organising a befitting Nigeria Open Golf Tournament, the biggest golfing event in the country after two decades of absence,” Runsewe said in Abuja, according to Complete Sports.
Runsewe also described the return as “a new beginning for golf in Nigeria” and said the federation took time to build sustainable structures before reviving the tournament. The NGF pointed to the implementation of the World Handicap System index, new digital infrastructure and a focus on IT-driven youth and coaching development programmes as part of those efforts.
Historically, the Nigeria Open ran from 1969 through 1999. It was primarily hosted at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos before moving to the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja for its final editions, Complete Sports reported.
The federation presented the event as a pathway to international circuits through its world-ranking links and Amateur World Ranking connection. Further details on confirmed venues, prize money and the final player list were not provided in the announcement.
Complete Sports carried the report of Runsewe’s announcement and the NGF’s plans. The outlet said the declaration was made on a Saturday in Abuja.
