Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his campaign for the 2027 presidency, his campaign said on Sunday.

The statement announcing his return was issued to journalists, the candidate said, and marked what the AAC described as a new phase of nationwide campaign activities ahead of next year’s election. Multiple news outlets reported the arrival and the campaign plans (Vanguard), (Punch) and (Premium Times).

According to the campaign statement, Sowore said he left for the United States because of what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies. While abroad, he engaged Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters and activists on his political agenda and participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York, the statement said (Vanguard) (Punch) (Premium Times).

Sowore told journalists he would continue to attend court proceedings linked to a cybercrime case instituted against him in 2025. The case was brought by the Department of State Services (DSS), also known as the State Security Service (SSS), (Vanguard) (Punch) (Premium Times).

The campaign said Sowore is expected to arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, before proceeding to Abuja. He outlined plans for a series of engagements across the country, saying the campaign will reach workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders and professionals to discuss the AAC’s 2027 agenda.

“I plan to engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across the country,” Sowore said in the statement (Premium Times).

The campaign said it will focus on political, social and economic issues, including equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development. Sowore also reiterated his commitment to enabling Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the country’s democratic process, adding that an AAC administration would pursue diaspora voting if he is elected president in 2027 (Punch) (Vanguard).

“My campaign will continue to advocate fundamental political, social and economic transformation,” he said in the statement (Vanguard).

All reporting on the return and campaign plans is based on Sowore’s statement to newsmen and subsequent coverage by national news agencies and media outlets.
