Governor Sule inaugurates 5.2km Akwanga-Jos bypass in Akwanga

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule inaugurated a newly completed 5.2-kilometre Akwanga-Jos bypass in Akwanga Local Government Area on Saturday, Punch reported.

The governor also opened three one-kilometre roads, each constructed by the local government chairmen in Akwanga, Nasarawa-Eggon and Wamba, as part of activities marking the state’s 30th anniversary on October 1, 2026, the report said.

Sule described the 5.2km bypass as a strategic intervention to reduce congestion in Akwanga town and to boost economic activity. He said the new route has cut travel distance by more than 5km for motorists travelling from Keffi or Gudi to Jos, curbed frequent accidents in the town and extended the lifespan of township roads.

The governor was quoted, “This is more than a road. It is an economic corridor. For years, our people in Akwanga have suffered traffic gridlock and accidents because all vehicles going towards Jos must pass through the heart of the town. Today, we have provided an alternative route that will bring relief to our people and open up new areas for development.”

Sule commended the contractor for delivering the project on schedule and within specifications. He said the bypass was built to the same standard as the federal highway to withstand heavy-duty vehicles, and he promised to install solar street lights along the road to improve night-time safety.

The three local government chairmen present at the event, Sadiyanu Isa-Andaha of Akwanga, Ilita Aliyu of Nasarawa-Eggon and Ezekiel Jaga of Wamba, expressed gratitude to the governor for granting autonomy to the LGAs and said they would continue to execute projects that directly affect grassroots residents, the report said.

Deputy Governor Dr Emmanuel Akabe outlined plans for the state anniversary, Punch reported. He said the programme would begin with Juma’at prayers at the Old Secretariat Mosque, followed by project inaugurations across the state, an interdenominational church service at St William’s Cathedral Lafia, visits to correctional facilities for prerogative of mercy, an Interstate novelty football match between Plateau and Nasarawa, a Plateau-Nasarawa @30 reunion, awards of distinction and the Independence Day celebration.

Yakuba Kwanta, Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, said the bypass would encourage new settlements and commercial activity along the corridor. A top royal father in the area, the Chun Mada Samson Gamu-Yare, thanked the governor and said the bypass would “save lives and bring more development closer to our people. We are grateful,” Punch quoted.

Those who attended included Senator Danladi Halilu-Envulanza, traditional rulers, state commissioners, leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Nasarawa and local residents, the report added.
